From 1992 to date, freelance illustration has been my full time gig. But I began long before that, at the age of eleven, illustrating my father's articles and columns for newspapers in Washington and Idaho. This took the form of political cartoons during my high school years. Thereafter, I moved to Seattle to study fine art at Cornish College of the Arts. After an 18 month hiatus to serve a mission for my church (in Jamaica, mon!), I resumed my education--but at the Art Institute of Seattle, where I completed an associate degree in Visual Communications. This course of study included advertising and graphic design, as well as illustration. I worked breifly as an assistant art director at the Seattle Weekly, then settled into full time illustration. |

My illustrations and cartoons have been published in Australia, Europe and Asia, as well as throughout North America. In addition, I have drawn hundreds of storyboards for the advertising industry, thousands of caricatures at events and fairs, painted murals and portraits, and licensed art for merchandise. Worked in a variety of artistic styles in both traditional media and digital, ranging from classical realism in oils to ink (with a brush) and Photoshop® (with a Wacom® tablet.) My early influences were Michelangelo and Leonardo, Al Capp and Charles Schultz. My political cartoons were informed by Pat Oliphant and Jeff MacNelly, and Bill Watterson haunts me in my sleep. Chuck Close inspires me to vindicate my childhood. Of late I am enamored with Bougeureau and Carl Bloch. My creative interests extend to writing (so far mostly poetry), learning to play the piano and singing (tenor.) I'm a big time fan of Seattle Opera and Seattle Mariners. US Masters Swimming keeps me in shape. |
